The Elephant.
How quickly we forget
All the things that made us irksome
All the little: all the small potatoes wrapped in memory thick.
How quickly we forget
All the things that drive the the distance
Flashbacks painful: flashbacks vivid that are sharp and clean and quick.
How quickly we forget
And leave worries to the others: because life is short!
'We can't control' what for us life just picks.
How quickly we forget
What bores fissures in our friendships
And the stucco keeping words in mouths forgiveness sure would fix.
How quickly we forget
That which makes us green and gruesome
And divided up by nuances and circumstance and luck.
How quickly we forget
That the salt shaker is heavy
From the grains and grains and grains we'd take to just not give a fuck.
How quickly we forget
All the hours spent just waiting
And the wanting and the jealousy and hallmark carded bliss.
How quickly we forget
What's behind us is behind us
New leaves grow again each year, disintegrate and die, and yet-
How quickly we remember: how little we forget.
